Application notes, technical articles and white papers for component makers

I explain how to select and use your parts, with worked examples and figures drawn from code. Your specialist provides the product data, joins an interview and reviews the draft.

Application and support topics

If your team answers the same design question every week, that answer belongs in a document an engineer can find before they call. For example:

“Can this TEC hold my set-point at a 50 °C case, and what does that do to wavelength?”

“How far does this filter’s passband move at 10 degrees in an f/2 cone?”

Gaussian beam propagation

Support teams get this question every week. Set the beam’s wavelength, waist and M², then drag the lens along the axis: the spot radius at your work distance updates as it moves, along with the new waist, the Rayleigh range and the divergence on each side of the lens.

  • Beam with this M²
  • M² = 1, same waist
  • Far-field asymptote
  • Work plane

Application notes

  • 4 to 8 pages, with the short answer up front and a worked example
  • Figures drawn from code
  • The calculation script behind the figures and tables
  • Schematic illustrations of your tested reference circuit, where the note needs one
  • One technical review and one polish review
  • Word and PDF in your template, or a clean layout of my own

Technical articles

  • 1,200 to 2,000 words for your site or LinkedIn
  • One interview with your specialist
  • One figure drawn from code
  • One review round

White papers

  • 6 to 12 pages on a method or a market question
  • A worked example with supporting calculations
  • One technical review and one polish review

Additional documents

  • Post series for LinkedIn or your newsletter
  • Launch and trade-show copy
  • Written product-training material for your reps and distributors
  • Contributed trade articles, ghostwritten for your engineer and pitched to an editor

Each is quoted with a fixed scope and price.

How it works

  1. Pick the question

From the free review, or from the list your sales team already has.

  2. One interview

About an hour with your specialist, plus your datasheets and test data.

  3. Draft

I write the document and prepare its figures from your data.

  4. Review and revise

One technical review, then one final review of the revisions. Technical articles include one review round.

  5. Deliver

The final document, figures and calculation files.

Common questions

Can it go out under our engineer’s name?

Yes. I can ghostwrite for your engineer, and they review and sign off before anything is published.

How much of our engineers’ time does it take?

About an hour for the interview, followed by a technical review of the draft. Application notes and white papers also include a final review of the revisions. Technical articles include one review round.

What do you need from us?

Your datasheets, any test data behind the example, and the question with who asks it. Public-release information only.

Can the model behind the note be in MATLAB?

Yes, on request: a MATLAB script as an add-on. By default the calculation files are written in Python and delivered with the note.

Who owns it?

The proposal sets out ownership and usage rights for the document, figures and calculation files.

Launching a new part? The Product Launch Package pairs a technical article with a datasheet refresh, a product page, three posts and the launch email.
